Open Dental stays your chart and your system of record. This connects through Open Dental's published API and adds voice charting on top of it. It is not a replacement chart, not a data migration and not a conversion. Every exam we write is a normal Open Dental perio exam that you open, edit and print in Open Dental the way you always have.
When the hygienist opens the patient, up to four of their most recent Open Dental perio exams are read in, and the most recent one shows on the chart as last-visit numbers, so there is a baseline to compare against. Missing teeth are worked out from Open Dental's chart (teeth marked Missing and completed extractions, not counting implants) and skipped instead of probed. Your team can override the list for a patient. The hygienist then reads the numbers aloud: six sites per tooth, plus bleeding, suppuration, recession and mobility. The exam fills in as it is spoken, and nobody has to type.
Before syncing, the review step flags readings that look out of place (very deep pockets or a site far deeper than its neighbors) so they can be corrected by tapping the site. Voice capture on its own writes nothing to Open Dental. The exam is only written when someone on your team clicks Sync to PMS.
When you sync, a new perio exam is created in Open Dental under the patient, dated to the exam day. Each charted tooth's values are written into the exam's MB, B, DB, ML, L and DL sites. In the same sync, a 'Perio Chart' summary is added to the patient's Comm Log and the perio chart PDF is uploaded to the Imaging module. If a sync is interrupted, the retry finishes the perio exam it already started rather than creating a second exam. Each sync also files a Comm Log summary and a PDF, so a retried sync can leave an extra copy of those two. A sync that writes no probe values is reported as a failure, not as a success.
No Intake.Dental software installs on your server. The connection runs through Open Dental's published API, which Open Dental serves through the eConnector on your own server, so the eConnector has to be running and the server needs to stay on overnight for the scheduled syncs. Setup takes three steps and about five minutes. We issue your API key from the dashboard. In Open Dental you go to Setup > Advanced Setup > API, enable the API and use Add Key to paste it in. Then you click Connect, and we test the key. There is no direct database access, no VPN or port forwarding, no data migration and no conversion. You can disable the key from inside Open Dental at any time. The same connection also covers AI clinical notes, insurance verification (we read the plan from Open Dental, check eligibility through our clearinghouse connection, and write the results back), intake form PDFs (with insurance card images included in the filed PDF), reading treatment plans, x-ray images, patient search, texts and emails mirrored into the Comm Log, and appointment booking. Voice Perio Charting is a $49.99/month add-on, and it is included in the Practice Autopilot plan.
No. Open Dental stays your system of record and your chart. The perio exam is written into Open Dental's own Perio Chart. If you use them, the AI clinical note and an insurance benefits summary (in the appointment note) also go into Open Dental.
Yes. When you open a patient, up to four of their most recent Open Dental perio exams are read in. The most recent one appears on the new chart as last-visit numbers, so you can compare pocket depths visit to visit, and the others are in the patient's perio history. Your history stays in Open Dental. We read it, and we do not move it or change it.
All of them. Probing depths, gingival margin (recession), bleeding and suppuration points, and mobility are written onto the same Open Dental perio exam, in the same rows Open Dental itself uses. You see them in the Perio Chart the same way you would if they had been keyed in by hand.
Missing teeth are worked out from Open Dental's chart (teeth marked Missing and completed extractions, not counting implants) and skipped instead of probed. Your team can override the list for a patient. They are written to the exam as skipped teeth, so the hygienist does not have to call them out and the chart does not show empty readings for them.
In three places. The exam is in the Perio Chart under the exam date. A short 'Perio Chart' summary is in the patient's Comm Log. The perio chart PDF is in the Imaging module, so you can print it or send it with a referral the way you normally would.
No. You do not have to turn off Open Dental's built-in perio voice feature. This connects through the published API rather than sitting in front of the chart, so a room that prefers the built-in microphone can keep using it.
The exam stays in Intake.Dental and the sync can be retried. A retry finishes the perio exam it already started rather than creating a second exam. Each sync also files a Comm Log summary and a PDF, so a retried sync can leave an extra copy of those two. A sync that wrote no probe values counts as a failure and is shown as one. If the eConnector is offline, the dashboard shows when it last answered so your team knows where to look.
Open Dental's eConnector, which serves the Open Dental API. You can confirm it is running in Open Dental under Tools > Misc Tools > Service Manager. Beyond that, you paste the API key we issue into Setup > Advanced Setup > API > Add Key. There is no direct database access and nothing else to install.
No. Open Dental's per-location API fee is billed to us as the developer, not to your office. You pay the published Intake.Dental price. Voice Perio Charting is a $49.99/month add-on, and it is included in the Practice Autopilot plan.
We have not yet connected an office on Open Dental Cloud (the version Open Dental hosts), so we cannot promise it today. If you are on Open Dental Cloud, talk to us before you sign up, and we will check it with you first.
No. During charting, the audio streams to our speech-to-text service so the numbers can be transcribed live. We do not save the recording. The transcribed words are used to fill in the chart and are not stored with the exam; only the measurements are saved. Where your state requires everyone in the room to consent to recording, collect the patient's recording consent before you start voice charting. A recording consent form is included with your forms. If the patient declines, chart by hand. PHI is encrypted at the field level at rest, and a BAA is signed on every plan.
Today the charting screen does not ask for a provider, so we do not set one on the perio exam. If your office tracks the provider on perio exams, set it in Open Dental after the sync. AI clinical notes on Open Dental are filed differently: as a procedure note on the visit's completed procedure, not as a Comm Log entry.
If you run Open Dental and want the hygienist's hands free during probing, this is what it does. The last exam loads for comparison, and the new exam is spoken, checked, and written back to Open Dental's Perio Chart. Nothing is written until someone on your team clicks Sync to PMS. The exam carries depths, recession, bleeding, suppuration, mobility and missing teeth. A Comm Log summary and the PDF in Imaging are filed in the same sync. Open Dental stays your chart, and the connection runs through its published API. Voice Perio Charting is a $49.99/month add-on with no contract, and it is included in the Practice Autopilot plan.

The hygienist calls the numbers out loud and the exam is captured hands-free. When the exam is done, the charting screen flags suspicious readings so they can be corrected. Nothing goes to Open Dental until someone on your team clicks Sync to PMS. The sync writes a new exam into Open Dental's Perio Chart, dated to the exam day. The exam carries probing depths, recession, bleeding and suppuration points, mobility and missing teeth. A short summary goes into the Comm Log and a perio chart PDF is filed to Imaging in the same sync. The patient's last Open Dental exam shows on the new chart, so the hygienist can compare against it.
